Puppy Litter Training: An Option in Training Your PuppySo, you have selected the puppy. It is all ready to come and join in your family. It is now time to decide the type of potty training that you will adopt. When it comes to potty training, there are several options available to people. Classic training methods include crate and paper training. A relatively new technique now being employed by many people is puppy litter training.
How It Works
Cats and perhaps even rabbits being trained to use the litter box may not be new to many of us. Puppy litter training has also become a practical form of potty training. For those of you, who live in smaller places, with no yards, puppy litter training is ideal. Usually the puppy litter training is used for smaller dogs since the larger breeds would have difficulty using the litter box.
To start puppy litter training, you have to demarcate a place in the house which would be convenient for the dog and out of the way. When training your dog, it would help, if you can create some form of a schedule for the puppy. Feed your puppy around the same time every day. Do not leave food before the puppy all day long. If you do, the puppy may overeat and you will later encounter a weight problem for your dog. If you maintain a specific time to feed your puppy every day, the puppy’s natural calls also will follow a schedule. In turn, this would be helpful in puppy litter training.
It is important to select the right type of litter box. The box should be big enough for your dog to stand in even when it reaches the adulthood. Puppy litter training would also involve buying dog litter for the box. Ofcourse this is sold in pet stores and is very similar to kitty litter. When you get the hunch that your puppy may want to relieve itself, place the puppy in the litter box. Talk to your puppy, tell him how well he is doing and ensure that they remain in the litter box till they are through with. Reward your puppy by praising and patting them. Encouragement is an essential part of puppy litter training inorder to get the puppy come back to the litter box. Encouragement and praise will reinforce any form of training. Once you reward ideal behaviour, the puppy will be encouraged to repeat the same behaviour.
Puppy litter training is identical to introducing a rabbit or cat to the litter box and generally, you would not have any difficulty in training your puppy through this method. |
